Announcement: War on the Front Page: Ukraine in Headlines exhibition, Feb 17-Mar 01
Headlines tell us much more than just the news. They show what interests the reader the most, what part of the article is considered crucial to the editor, and what emotional feedback we should expect. Headlines about the most important events appear on the main pages of websites and on the first pages of newspapers; something world-changing can even produce numerous articles in the 'Main events' section.
When the russian full-scale invasion started in February 2022, the news exploded with reports, analytics and opinions about the war. Headlines about Ukraine were everywhere and for all the wrong reasons. The world was constantly asking about what was happening in Ukraine, and the newspapers answered, showcasing all attacks, offensives, and advances.
Time passes, and society’s opinions and interests change. How does it affect the news we read every day? Can we see the shift in interest in Ukraine in the news headlines?
In the exhibition “War on the Front Page: Ukraine in Headlines“, we try to study the narratives and presence of the war in the news articles. We show 11 years of headlines about Ukraine, trying to understand how the level of interest and opinions changed throughout the wartime. With this exhibition, we would like to remind everyone that the war in Ukraine is not over, despite its decreasing presence in the news, and try to accentuate that the headlines shape society’s opinions to the same extent that society’s opinions shape the headlines.
